I Gave My Love A Cookie

Happy Valentine's Day!

I have been so caught up in the cupcake craze lately that I forgot how much I like baking and decorating cookies. Okay, that's not entirely accurate. I like baking and decorating cookies when I have long stretches of time with nothing else to do except pick and fuss and play with the decorations. I like them to be perfect little pieces of art.

This is pretty unrealistic when you have kids. I had to learn the hard way that small children do not give a flit if their cookie is a perfect replica of our state, complete with capitol and scenic landmarks. With that in mind, we set out decorating cookies....at 8am. School starts at 9. Armed with royal icing, sprinkles, and sanding sugar, the little Tanager's went to work. Meanwhile, I franticly filled juice bottles, made snacks, and searched for 100 things that would fit into a ziploc bag. Somewhere along the way, a half pound of red sanding sugar was spilled on the floor, which only made things more interesting. The next few minutes were filled with squeals of "Look, mommy I skating!" and "Mommy, mommy, the cat has a red nose." At least they were having fun.

Realizing we weren't going to be finished on time, I skidded across the floor and scooted them out the door. After dropping the kids off, I came home and finished the cookies in time for the party. I went in and played it cool, "Why yes, I did make these cookies." Trying so hard to seem relaxed, "Oh, it was nothing." It wasn't until I got home I noticed the huge glob of pink icing in my hair.
